“I wanted to add my observations on that process . . . and describe an experience that I had . . . on behalf of the District 225 Board of Education, a public two-high school district in the North Suburbs of Chicago of approximately 5,000 students.
“. . . Based on my very positive (business) experience I presented (strategic implementation) to our superintendent and his administrative team as a way of addressing a series of fiscal and operational challenges (we had cut back all departments, had deferred necessary capital projects, and completed a RIF in major administrative departments while at the same time facing a turn-over of 4 of 6 of our top administrators of our two high schools. The school board interviewed a number of consultants (before going ahead with the education catalyst."
“We developed a comprehensive planning process that involved over 80 ‘volunteers’ ( parents, students, teachers, staff, administrators, school board members, community and business leaders, the vast majority were not in school administration). In an intense three day workshop we set the priorities of the district which were followed with a number of separate initiatives. Ultimately in less than 4 months a comprehensive plan was vetted with the community at large in multiple outreach meetings and finalized. Within 6 months thereafter a referendum was successfully passed (notwithstanding that we were not in crisis) and the key initiatives were funded...."
“There is no question that this approach is unique, but my two separate experiences one with a large international law firm and the other with a public school district suggest that their (process) made a very positive difference.”
